The life
Braun 1541–1622, Hogenberg 1535–1590Born Cologne (Braun) and Mechelen, Flanders (Hogenberg)
Georg Braun, a Catholic canon in Cologne, edited the Civitates Orbis Terrarum, six volumes of city views and plans published between 1572 and 1617, and Frans Hogenberg, a Protestant engraver from Mechelen who had settled in Cologne, engraved most of the plates for the first four. Together the volumes show more than 500 cities, from Antwerp and Seville to Cairo and Mexico City. Many plates were drawn after other artists, above all the Flemish painter Joris Hoefnagel, who sketched the towns of Spain on his travels, and also Marcus Gerards, Jos Murer and John Speed. Our Famous Cities cards open onto 61 of their views, among them Seville, Granada and Toledo after Hoefnagel, Bruges after Gerards, Zurich after Murer and York after Speed.
