Windmill De Adriaan, Haarlem
Pictures by Photoglob Co. and Braun & Hogenberg
The windmill De Adriaan stands over the Spaarne in Haarlem, its sails and a little drawbridge mirrored in calm water, in a hand-coloured photochrom from about 1895. Inside, an old bird's-eye map of the walled city spreads out in greens and reds. The mill was first built in 1779, and the one standing today is a faithful rebuilding. For a traveller or someone with a soft spot for Holland.
