The Strait of Messina
Pictures by Braun & Hogenberg
Mount Etna trails smoke above the Strait of Messina while tall ships sail into the city's curving harbour, in a hand-coloured engraving by Braun and Hogenberg from 1617. That sickle-shaped harbour gave Messina its ancient Greek name, Zancle, meaning sickle. For a traveller, or anyone who loves Sicily and old maps.
