The life
1665–1736Born Etzel, East Frisia (now Germany)
Albertus Seba was a pharmacist in Amsterdam who bought shells, snakes, butterflies and other wonders from ships returning from around the world. He sold one collection to Peter the Great of Russia in 1717, then built another. His Thesaurus, four great volumes of engraved plates published from 1734, records it. Our shell cards come from its pages.
