Scallops and Cockles
Pictures by Albertus Seba
Rows of scallop and cockle shells in coral red, plum and gold fill this engraved plate from Albertus Seba's Thesaurus of Natural Curiosities of 1758. Seba, an Amsterdam apothecary, had his great cabinet of shells and sea creatures drawn and engraved, and the back adds that a scallop sees through up to two hundred tiny blue eyes. For someone who loves the seashore.
