Snail Shells
Pictures by Albertus Seba
Rows of hand-coloured snail shells, swirled in rust, cream, rose and teal, fill the cover of this card from Albertus Seba's Thesaurus of Natural Curiosities of 1758. Seba, an Amsterdam apothecary, had his great cabinet of shells and sea creatures drawn and engraved, and a snail's shell grows with it, each new turn of home built onto the last. For someone who loves the natural world.
