The life
1881–1953Born Paris, France
Albert Gleizes was a Paris painter who helped shape Cubism, and in 1912 he and Jean Metzinger wrote Du “Cubisme”, the first book about it. During the First World War he lived for a time in New York, and the city’s bridges and music found their way into his pictures. Later he turned to religious and decorative painting in the French countryside. Our two cards, Composition for Jazz and On a Sailboat, are from his New York years, 1915 and 1916.
