The life
1829–1919
Sir Thomas Sebastian Bazley, son of a Manchester cotton spinner and member of Parliament, was a devoted amateur of geometric turning. He cut his designs on a Holtzapffel lathe fitted with an epicycloidal cutting frame, a set of gears that sends the cutting point round and round in loops, and printed them as white lines on black in Notes on the Epicycloidal Cutting Frame (London, 1872). Our spiral, rosette and starburst cards come from that book.
