The life
1809–1873
Thomas Hartley Cromek, son of the engraver Robert Hartley Cromek, studied landscape painting in Leeds and in 1830 set out for Italy. For most of the years from 1831 to 1849 he lived in Rome, making careful, beautifully coloured drawings of the buildings and scenery of Italy and Greece. In 1850 he was elected an Associate of the New Society of Painters in Water-Colours, and he spent his last years in Wakefield. Our card, The Arch of Titus and the Colosseum, Rome, is his watercolour of 1846.
