The life
1878–1951Born London, England
Pamela Colman Smith grew up between Manchester, Jamaica and Brooklyn, studied art at the Pratt Institute in New York, and settled in London, where she illustrated books, designed for the theatre, wrote down Jamaican folk tales and ran a small press. In 1909 she drew all 78 cards of a new tarot deck for the writer Arthur Edward Waite, published by Rider. It became the most widely used tarot in the world, and its pictures, the Fool at the cliff’s edge, the Star pouring water under the night sky, are hers. Our Tarot cards are her Major Arcana.
