The life
c. 1788-1831Born England (place unknown); worked in London
Sidney Hall was a London engraver and mapmaker, known for atlases of Britain and of the ancient world; he is thought to have been the first to engrave maps on steel plates. He died in 1831, aged about 42, and his widow Selina carried on the business. Urania's Mirror (1824) is a boxed set of 32 constellation cards with holes punched for the stars, so that they shine when the card is held up to a light. Each card is signed 'Sidy. Hall sculpt.', which means Hall engraved it. The figures themselves were redrawn from Alexander Jamieson's Celestial Atlas (1822), and the set was credited to 'a young lady', since identified as the Reverend Richard Rouse Bloxam of Rugby School. Picturepops cards use the Urania's Mirror figures.
