The life
1731–1809Born Nottingham, England
Paul Sandby was born in Nottingham and in 1745 followed his brother Thomas into the military drawing office at the Tower of London. Working on the military survey of Scotland, he sketched Edinburgh and the Highlands as he went, and he went on to paint watercolour landscapes and etch many plates after his own drawings. He was one of the founding members of the Royal Academy in 1768. Our card, Edinburgh Castle from the Grassmarket, carries his 1753 view of the city inside.
