Edinburgh Castle from the Grassmarket
Pictures by Paul Sandby
Edinburgh Castle rises on its great rock above the tall old houses of the Grassmarket in this photochrom from about 1895, with Paul Sandby's 1753 view of the city inside. The rock under the castle is the core of an ancient volcano, worn down by glaciers into the cliff you see here. For someone who loves Edinburgh or is setting off to see it.
