The life
1856-1915Born Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA
William Wallace Denslow was born in Philadelphia. He took brief classes at the National Academy of Design and Cooper Union in New York but was largely self-trained. He traveled the country as a newspaper artist and reporter, then settled in Chicago after the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition, where he became known for posters, book designs and bookplates. In Chicago he worked with L. Frank Baum on Father Goose: His Book and on The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (1900), whose color plates and colored text drawings made it unusually bright for its time. The two men later fell out over royalties from the 1902 stage version. Picturepops cards use his plates and drawings from the 1900 book.
