The life
1826–1869
Born Suzuki Chinpei, he trained under the great landscape artist Utagawa Hiroshige, and after his master’s death in 1858 married his daughter and took the name Hiroshige II. His prints follow his teacher’s so closely that scholars have often confused the two. In 1865 he moved to Yokohama and worked under the name Kisai Risshō. Our cards, Tempo Hill, Osaka and Ships in Nagasaki Harbor, are his views of 1859.
