The life
about 1842–1894
Born Gotō Torakichi, he was a pupil of Utagawa Hiroshige, married his master’s daughter in 1867 and by 1869 was calling himself Hiroshige III. He is remembered for his pictures of a Japan opening to the world: the port of Yokohama, Tokyo’s Western-style buildings and the first steam trains. Our card, The Seafront at Yokohama, is his print of 1870.
