The life
1866–1942Born Kyoto, Japan
Kamisaka Sekka was born in Kyoto into a samurai family and became the last great artist of Rinpa, a school of painting known for bold shapes, gold and pattern. In 1901 he travelled to Europe and saw Art Nouveau at first hand. He designed lacquer, textiles and ceramics as well as paintings. Our cards come from Momoyogusa (Flowers of a Hundred Worlds), his three volumes of colour woodblock prints published in 1909 and 1910.
