The life
1882–1922Born San Antonio, Texas, United States
Julian Onderdonk was born in San Antonio, the son of the painter Robert Onderdonk. At nineteen he went to New York to study with William Merritt Chase, and he worked there for some years before coming home in 1909, where he painted his best work. His fields of bluebonnets in the Texas Hill Country earned him the name the father of Texas painting, and he died young, at forty. Our card, Early Morning on the San Antonio River, is his painting of the river at the old mill bridge in his home town, from 1919.
