Painter
The Spanish Cubist of clear, calm still lifes.
1887–1927Born Madrid, Spain
Juan Gris, born José Victoriano González-Pérez in Madrid, moved to Paris in 1906 and lived in the same studio building as Picasso. He made Cubism clearer and more orderly, building still lifes of glasses, bottles, newspapers and playing cards from crisp, bright planes. He died at 40. Our cards are Glass and Checkerboard and Ace of Clubs and Four of Diamonds (1915).
