The life

1854-1925Born Wexford, Ireland

Harry Furniss was born in Wexford, Ireland, to an English father and a Scottish mother, and went to school in Dublin. In London he drew for the Illustrated London News, and from 1880 contributed more than 2,600 drawings to Punch, many of them caricatures of politicians such as Gladstone. Lewis Carroll chose him to illustrate Sylvie and Bruno (1889) and Sylvie and Bruno Concluded (1893). Carroll watched every detail so closely that Furniss sometimes pretended to be out when he called. Later Furniss worked in early American film, and in 1914 made an animated cartoon for Thomas Edison's company. Picturepops cards use his drawings from the Sylvie and Bruno books.
