The life
1862–1918Born Baumgarten, near Vienna, Austria
Gustav Klimt was born near Vienna, the son of a gold engraver, and trained as a decorative painter. In 1897 he helped found the Vienna Secession, young artists who wanted to break away from the old academy, and he became its first president. His golden years gave us The Kiss (1907–08), now in the Belvedere in Vienna, and in his summers by the Attersee lake he painted quiet, square landscapes, gardens and woods among them. Our cards are The Kiss, two of those landscapes and his portrait of nine-year-old Mäda Primavesi.
