Painter
The German painter of blue horses and gentle deer.
1880–1916Born Munich, Germany
Franz Marc painted animals in strong, symbolic colours: blue for the spiritual, yellow for the gentle, red for the heavy world. In 1911 he and Wassily Kandinsky founded the Blue Rider (Der Blaue Reiter) in Munich. He was killed at Verdun in 1916, aged 36. Our cards, Blue Horse I, Deer in the Snow and The Tiger, are among his best-loved paintings.
