The life
1884–1977Born Naples, Italy
Francesco Cangiullo grew up in a family of Neapolitan woodcarvers and began as a writer of songs and leader of café-concert bands. After meeting Filippo Tommaso Marinetti in 1910 he joined the Futurists, wrote for their magazines and exhibited with Marinetti and Giacomo Balla in Rome in 1914. His books Piedigrotta (1916) and Caffeconcerto (1919) made lettering into performance, and he wrote much for the theatre. Our card, Piedigrotta, is the cover of his 1916 poem about the Naples festival of songs and fireworks.
