The life
1804–1873Born Görlitz, Germany
Edward Sachse was born in Görlitz, Germany, and ran E. Sachse & Co. in Baltimore, which published prints of the cities and sights of the region, among them a twelve-sheet view of Baltimore. During the Civil War the firm sold views of army camps and hospitals around Baltimore and Washington, which soldiers marked with their own tents and posted home. Our card View of Washington City comes from the firm’s 1871 view, with the unfinished Washington Monument still a stump.
