The life
1812-1888Born Holloway, Middlesex (now London), England
Edward Lear was drawing for a living by sixteen. In the 1830s he worked as a natural history artist, painting parrots and, for the Earl of Derby, the animals of the private menagerie at Knowsley Hall. He later traveled widely as a landscape painter. His comic verses, each with a quick pen drawing, were published as A Book of Nonsense in 1846, and the book helped make the limerick popular. More followed, including Nonsense Songs, Stories, Botany and Alphabets (1871), with The Owl and the Pussy-Cat, and More Nonsense (1872). He also set Tennyson's poems to music. He spent his last years in Sanremo, Italy. Picturepops cards use his nonsense drawings from 1846 to 1872.
