The life
about 1596–1665Born Neuhausen, near Worms, Germany
Andreas Cellarius, born Keller near Worms, studied in Heidelberg and settled in the Netherlands, marrying in Amsterdam in 1625 and becoming rector of the Latin School in Hoorn in 1637. There he wrote on fortification, on Poland and on the heavens, and in 1660 the Amsterdam publisher Johannes Janssonius brought out his Harmonia Macrocosmica, a celestial atlas of hand-coloured plates. Our cards, Leo, Cancer and the Great Bear and The Sizes of the Heavens, come from its pages.
