The life
1799–1871Born Tonbridge, Kent, England
Anna Atkins was an English botanist who learned photography in its earliest days. From 1843 she laid seaweeds straight onto light-sensitive paper in the sun, making cyanotypes, white shapes on deep blue, and bound them into Photographs of British Algae, often called the first book illustrated with photographs. Our seaweed cards are hers.
