The life
1864–1941Born Torzhok, Russia
Alexej von Jawlensky left a career as an army officer in Russia to paint, and settled in Munich in 1896 with Marianne von Werefkin. From 1908 they spent summers painting in the village of Murnau with Wassily Kandinsky and Gabriele Münter, in bold, flat colour. Later, in Wiesbaden, he painted long series of quiet, meditative heads. Our cards come from his bright years, 1908 to 1912.
