The life
1900–1973Born Varlamovo, Vologda province, Russia
Aleksei Pakhomov grew up in a village in the Vologda countryside and was sent to art school in Petrograd in 1915, studying later under Vladimir Lebedev and at the city’s art institute. In the late 1920s Lebedev drew him into children’s books, and Pakhomov illustrated dozens of them, many for the poet Samuil Marshak. He stayed in Leningrad through the wartime siege and drew it in a series of lithographs. Our card, The Craftsman, is the cover he drew for Marshak’s book Master in 1927.
