The life
1589–1662Born Delft, Netherlands
Adriaen van de Venne was born in Delft and in 1614 settled in Middelburg, where the work of Jan Brueghel the Elder shaped his early style. From 1625 he lived in The Hague, making grisailles and print designs of peasants, beggars and proverbs, and illustrating the popular books of the poet Jacob Cats. Our card, The Harbor of Middelburg, is his painting of 1615, with flag-decked ships at anchor and courtiers riding along the shore.
