The Harbor of Middelburg
Pictures by Adriaen van de Venne
Adriaen van de Venne's 1615 painting of Middelburg harbour, where flag-decked ships ride at anchor and courtiers on horseback parade along the shore, with an old hand-coloured map of the walled city inside. Middelburg is the capital of Zeeland, and the abbey tower on its skyline is fondly known as Lange Jan, or Long John. For a traveller, or anyone with ties to the Netherlands.
