St. Louis
Pictures by George Degen and Parsons & Atwater
George Degen's 1873 lithograph looks down on St. Louis as stormy clouds gather over the Mississippi and smoking steamboats pass beneath the arches of the Eads Bridge. Opened in 1874, the bridge was the first major one built with steel, and it still carries traffic across the river today. For someone who calls St. Louis home, or misses it.
