The life
1888–1963Born Novocherkassk, Russia
Vladimir Konashevich studied painting in Moscow and moved to Petrograd in 1915, where for some years he also cared for the palace museum at Pavlovsk. He made his first picture book, an alphabet, in 1918, and in the 1920s became one of the best-loved illustrators of Korney Chukovsky and Samuil Marshak. He stayed in Leningrad through the wartime siege and drew for children all his life. Our card, The Chatterbox Fly, is from his 1927 pictures for Chukovsky’s poem about a fly’s tea party.
