The life
1853–1890Born Zundert, the Netherlands
Vincent van Gogh came to painting late, deciding at 27 to become an artist, and worked for little more than ten years. He made around 860 oil paintings, most of them in the last two years of his life, much of that time in the south of France, where the light made his colours brighter and his brushstrokes bolder. He sold very little in his lifetime; today he is one of the best-loved painters in the world. Our irises, roses, oleanders, wheat field and farmhouse come from paintings he made in Arles and Saint-Rémy between 1888 and 1890.
