The life
c. 1654-1692Born Amersfoort, Dutch Republic (now the Netherlands)
Pieter Withoos was the second son of the painter Matthias Withoos and grew up in a family of artists: his brothers Johannes and Frans and his sister Alida also painted. After the French invasion of 1672 the family moved from Amersfoort to Hoorn. Pieter worked in watercolour and bodycolour on paper and specialised in flowers, insects, birds and other small animals, painted one to a sheet for the albums of wealthy garden owners and collectors, a fashion of the Dutch Golden Age. He later lived in Amsterdam, where he was buried in April 1692. On Picturepops cards: A Great Titmouse, a watercolour in The Metropolitan Museum of Art. No portrait of him is known, so his titmouse stands in for one here.
