Painter
The Russian painter of shimmering colour and fairy tales.
1856–1910Born Omsk, Russia
Mikhail Vrubel built his pictures from fragments of colour that glitter like mosaic or crystal. He painted figures from Russian fairy tales and opera, many inspired by his wife, the soprano Nadezhda Zabela, who sang the Swan Princess in Rimsky-Korsakov’s opera The Tale of Tsar Saltan. Our cards are Lilacs (1900) and The Swan Princess.
