The life
1852–1930Born Nivågård, Denmark
Malthe Engelsted studied theology for three years before entering the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in 1870, and first exhibited at Charlottenborg in 1880. Much of his work is gently humorous, like his card players and domino players, though he also painted serious religious pictures. With a prize and an academy grant he travelled through Germany, the Netherlands, France, Italy and Greece, mostly between 1887 and 1889. Our card, View Towards Siena, was painted on that journey, in 1888.
