The life
1893–1965Born Frankfurt am Main, Germany
Ludwig Hirschfeld-Mack studied at the Bauhaus from 1919, took its diploma in lithography in 1924 and worked there until 1926; with Kurt Schwerdtfeger he developed the coloured light-plays, moving colour projected on a screen to his own music. Exiled in England, he was deported to Australia in 1940 on the Dunera and interned, and from 1942 he taught art at Geelong Grammar School, teaching children harmony through colour. Our cards, Black Dot Over Blue, Squares and Bars and Colour Study on Mint, come from the colour plates he made for the Bauhaus book of 1923.
