The life
1820-1914Born Bayswater, London, England
John Tenniel was a London artist who spent more than fifty years at the weekly magazine Punch, joining in 1850 and becoming its chief political cartoonist in 1864. As a young man he lost most of the sight in his right eye in a fencing accident. Lewis Carroll asked him to illustrate Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1865) and Through the Looking-Glass (1871). His careful black-and-white drawings settled how Alice, the Hatter and the White Rabbit look for most readers to this day. In 1893 he became the first illustrator or cartoonist to be knighted for his work. Picturepops cards use his drawings from the two Alice books.
