The life
1835-1910Born New York City, USA
John La Farge was born in New York to French parents and grew up speaking both languages. He studied law, then painting, briefly in Paris with Thomas Couture and later with William Morris Hunt in Newport. He illustrated books, painted flowers and landscapes, and in 1878 began the large decorations of Trinity Church in Boston. He is best known for his stained glass: in 1880 he patented a way of layering opalescent glass that changed American windows. A trip to Japan in 1886 deepened a long interest in Japanese art; the anemone drawing on our card carries a red seal with his name in Japanese characters. On Picturepops cards: Anemone, a pencil drawing in the Cleveland Museum of Art.
