The life
1802–1858Born Augsburg, Germany
Johann Moritz Rugendas came from seven generations of Augsburg painters and engravers. He first went to Brazil in 1822 as an expedition artist, and later, inspired by Alexander von Humboldt, travelled through Mexico, Chile, Argentina, Uruguay, Peru and Bolivia, painting landscapes, towns and everyday life until he returned to Europe in 1846. Our card, Lima’s Main Square, is his watercolour of the Plaza Mayor and its cathedral from around 1843.
