The life
1664–1724Born Oberkammlach, Bavaria
Johann Baptist Homann was taught by Jesuits, became a Protestant and worked as a notary in Nuremberg before turning to engraving, and in 1702 he founded his own map publishing house there. In 1715 the emperor Charles VI named him imperial geographer, and in 1716 he published his Grosser Atlas über die ganze Welt; after his death the firm carried on as the Homann Heirs. Our card, The Copernican System, is his celestial map of 1716, drawn after the astronomer Johann Doppelmayr.
