The life
died 1848
Humphrey John Julian joined the Royal Navy in 1824 and became a lieutenant in 1840. He served off West Africa, then in China in the hospital ship Minden and in the East Indies in the flagship Cornwallis, and painted watercolours of the places he saw, from Hong Kong to Penang and the Cape of Good Hope. He was promoted commander shortly before his death at Devonport in 1848. Our card, Hong Kong Harbor, is his watercolour of 1843, when the first buildings of Victoria were rising along the shore.
