The life
1793–1849Born St Mary’s County, Maryland, United States
George Cooke was born in St Mary’s County, Maryland, and gave up a start in business to paint. After years of portraits and a long stay in Europe copying the old masters, he travelled the American South with his wife, painting portraits and views, and became one of its best-known painters. In his last years the Alabama industrialist Daniel Pratt built a gallery in Prattville to hold his pictures. Our card, Richmond from the Hill, is William James Bennett’s 1834 aquatint after his painting.
