The life
1818–1868Born Danzig (now Gdańsk, Poland)
Eduard Hildebrandt, a house-painter’s son from Danzig, trained in Berlin and then in Paris in the studio of the painter Isabey. Encouraged by Alexander von Humboldt and supported by the King of Prussia, he travelled to Brazil, North America, Egypt and the Holy Land, and in the early 1860s set off on a journey round the world that brought home more than 300 watercolours, drawings and paintings. Our card, The Praya Grande, Macau, is one of those watercolours, painted in 1863.
