The life
1859–1935Born Dorchester, Boston, Massachusetts, United States
Childe Hassam was born in Boston and became one of the best-known American Impressionists, painting city streets, gardens and the sea in bright, broken colour. He spent his summers by the water, at Appledore in the Isles of Shoals, Gloucester, Old Lyme and Newport, and made more than 3,000 paintings, watercolours and prints. In later life he painted his famous series of flag-hung New York avenues. Our card, Bailey’s Beach, Newport, is his painting of 1901, now at the Art Institute of Chicago.
