The life
1860–1940Born Bridport, Dorset, England
Charles William Bartlett studied at the Royal Academy in London and the Académie Julian in Paris, and painted for years in the Netherlands, Brittany and Venice. In 1913 he set out on a long journey through India, Ceylon, Java and China to Japan, where the publisher Watanabe Shōzaburō turned his watercolours into woodblock prints in 1916. On the way home in 1917 he stopped in Hawaii and stayed for the rest of his life, helping to found the Honolulu Printmakers in 1928. Our card, Taj Mahal, Agra, is one of those 1916 prints, in the Cleveland Museum of Art.
