Marseille, The Old Port
Pictures by Photoglob Co.
The Old Port of Marseille in a hand-coloured photochrom from about 1895, its deep blue water crowded with lateen-sailed boats below the basilica of Notre-Dame de la Garde. Inside, an old bird's-eye map shows the walled city. Marseille was founded by Greek sailors around 600 BC as Massalia, which makes it the oldest city in France. For a traveller, or anyone who loves the south of France.
