The life
1843–1942Born Keeseville, New York, United States
William Henry Jackson grew up painting, served in the Civil War and went west in 1866. As photographer to Ferdinand Hayden’s government surveys he made the first photographs of Yellowstone in 1871, pictures that helped persuade Congress to make it the first national park the next year. In 1897 he joined the Detroit Publishing Company, which coloured his photographs by the photochrom process and sold them across the world. Our cards, Denver, Colorado and Salt Lake City, are two of those photochroms, from 1898 and 1899.
