The life

1879-1961Born London, England

Vanessa Bell, born Vanessa Stephen, was an English painter and designer and the elder sister of the writer Virginia Woolf. She studied art in London and became a central figure of the Bloomsbury Group of writers and artists. With Roger Fry and Duncan Grant she ran the Omega Workshops (1913-1919), designing furniture, textiles and household objects, and her paintings of the 1910s, with flat colour and simple shapes, show the influence of the French Post-Impressionists. When Virginia and Leonard Woolf started the Hogarth Press, Bell designed covers and pictures for its books, including four full-page woodcuts for Woolf's story collection Monday or Tuesday (1921). From 1916 she lived at Charleston farmhouse in Sussex. Picturepops cards use her woodcuts from Monday or Tuesday.
